what is The Artist Index?

THE ARTIST INDEX (TAI)
is an internet resource that supports the visual arts of Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina by promoting its artists and the galleries that represent them to people interested in original art.

To accomplish this, The Artist Index features a collection of directories designed to connect art lovers with artists and gallery websites. Chief among them is The Fine Artist Directory.

THE FINE ARTIST DIRECTORY
provides links to artist websites
and/or to other pages on TAI on which
these artists are featured.

Currently this directory is made up of the following sections:

  1. The Artists by Name Directory
This is a FREE listing for any artist who is 18+ years old, who resides in the counties of Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina, and who owns his/her own website.
  2. A Request To Be Listed form is available here.
    *see BASIC LISTING

The next three directories are modestly priced listings that individual artists can tailor to augment their marketing needs.

  3. The Artists by Locale Directory
Some artists prefer to be identified with a specific locale. Some collectors like to see what a particular area has to offer. Locale groupings are added/deleted as needed.

  4. The Artists by Medium Directory
Many artists create works in a number of different media. This gallery may be used by the artist either to show their strong suits or to expand public awareness of their artistic range.

  5. The Artists by Genre Directory
Many people collect particular subjects or genres. This directory helps people connect to their subject of interest.

A Request To Be Listed form is available here.
    *see EXPANDED LISTINGS

THE NON-PROFIT GALLERY DIRECTORY
This is a FREE listing by county for any 501(c)3 gallery that is located in the counties of Upstate South Carolina and Western North Carolina, that exhibits visual art, and that has a website.

A Request To Be Listed form is available here.

#3 - I DO NOT have a website

In today's internet oriented culture, it is very important for artists to maintain an online presence.

If you do not currently have a website or digital portfolio, you have a number of options.

#3.1 - do it all yourself

There are a number of companies that advertise free or cheap websites ...many are specifically for artists.

Before you hit the search engines, take a moment and familiarize yourself with some of the advantages and disadvantages of free sites
(list is courtesy of Light Space & Time)

Some Advantages

  • The website is free to set-up.
  • The web hosting is free.
  • Easy to set-up and load art.
  • Able to market from that platform to social media.
  • The web host promotes their site to attract visitors.

Some Disadvantages

  • Often difficult to find your website/art portfolio.
  • The art is commingled with ads and other artist’s art.
  • In many cases Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is not possible.
  • Being free often means that there are limitations on design and size.

Once you have your site up and running, PLEASE contact The Artist Index so we can list you in our Directory.

#3.2 - do some of it yourself

Adding and changing the content of your site is very important. It gives viewers a reason to come back and it improves your site's status in the search engine rankings. Some designers will set up the basic site for you and teach you how to make updates yourself.

By using a Content Management System (CMS), a designer can create a site for you so that you can maintain it yourself.

Periodically, you can have the designer tweak or freshen up the site for you.

Joomla, Droopl, Tumblr, Behance, and WordPress are a few examples of CMSs.

Once you have your site up and running, PLEASE contact The Artist Index so we can list you in the FREE Directory.
#3.3 - get an Artist Index Portfolio

If you're not sure exactly where you want to go with a website, but want to get the ball rolling, you may be interested in an Artist Index Portfolio.

Although simple, it immediately gives you a web presence that is fully linked in to The Fine Artist Directory and optimized for your search engine audience. Included in the package is the equivalent of an EXPANDED Listing in The Fine Artist Directory.

  • 1 listing in the ARTISTS BY NAME Directory (FREE BASIC LISTING)

  • PLUS: 1 LOCALE Directory listing

  • PLUS: 3 additional listings (any combo of MEDIUM & GENRE)

  • PLUS: inclusion in conventional & internet promotion
    • current social media used: Facebook & Twitter
    • under development: blogs & other social media outlets

#3.4 - get a Custom Designed Website

Let us work with you to create the site that fits your needs and budget.

How does the TAI Navigation System work?

Because The Artist Index (TAI) is a directory, many of the links it contains lead to sites and pages outside of theartistindex.com. These sights do not share a common navigation system with TAI. In fact, they are not even required to be linked to it.

For this reason ALL external sites ALWAYS open in a new page. Besides ensuring that a viewer is able to return to TAI quickly, this has the added advantage of allowing the viewer to have multiple pages open at once if they'd like to compare artists.

Following are TAI's navigation symbols and what they do:

go to
THE ARTIST INDEX home page

go to
the TOP OF PAGE
go to
the FINE ARTIST DIRECTORY
go to
the FAQs page
(this page)
go BACKWARD IN HISTORY;
this works the same as the back arrow in your browser
CLOSE this page
go FORWARD IN HISTORY;
this works the same as the forward arrow in your browser

& extra reading

HINT: Should you forget what a Navigation button does, place the cursor over the button. After about 2 seconds a tool tip should pop up.
